Central Intelligence is an American comedy movie released in 2016. Directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber (We’re the Millers), it is about two friends Calvin Joyner (Kevin Hart) and Bob Stone (Dwayne Johnson) joining a mission to track down a terrorist who wants to destroy the world.
At the beginning of the movie we learn Bob Stone (Dwayne Johnson) was originally called Robbie Wheirdicht but after graduation changed his name to Bob Stone as part of his transformation from the fat kid who was bullied in high school into a tall, muscular man working for the CIA. Unlike his only friend Calvin who used to be the popular kid and now is unsatisfied with his job as an accountant he exudes confidence. Bob’s clothing style is casual and apart from a couple of scenes where he sports a black CIA uniform he mostly wears t-shirts paired with loose pants. Dwayne Johnson’s trademark brown leather fanny pack is definitely cool, but let’s take a look at his watch.
In the movie you can see Bob wearing a Hamilton Khaki Navy Belowzero 1000M Auto reference H78585333. You often hear people from the community complain about how anything bigger than 42mm is too huge for a watch and with 46mm in diameter it certainly is a monster on the wrist. But since Bob is about 6 ft 5 in (193cm) it’s still looks right. It has a screw-down crown and is water-resistant up to 100 bar (1000m). It is made of stainless steel with a black PVD coating and comes on a black rubber strap, so it matches the dark CIA uniform theme. Its movement is a modified ETA 2826-2 with a power reserve of about 40 hours.
Central Intelligence has a few action scenes here and there, so wearing a sports watch makes sense. Bob has spent years working out every day to turn into the beast he is now, so he is right about rewarding himself with a beautiful watch like the Khaki Navy Belowzero. However, you can’t help but think he should have got something even nicer than that. Hamilton is not something you’d consider unique and chosing the same watch Mark Watney (Matt Damon) wore in The Martian doesn’t help, either. Of course there’s a few interesting vintage Hamilton pieces, but as many have said before, brands like Hamilton and Tissot are often associated with people who can’t really decide if they want to invest in a real timepiece or not. That being said, there’s other brands like Panerai who also offer dark-coated sports watches, but at an even higher level of craftsmanship. We still can be glad he didn’t decide to go with some cheap quartz or smart watch and therefore appreciate the fact he is wearing a mechanical watch at a time when it feels like everybody is waiting for the next generation Apple Watch.
