‘Due Date’: Peter Highman (Robert Downey Jr.) & his Rolex Datejust

OVERVIEW:

Due Date is an American comedy movie released in 2010. Directed by Todd Philips (The Hangover Trilogy, War Dogs), it is about Robert Downey Jr. starring as Peter Highman, an architect who is trying to make it to LA on time to be at the birth of his child. When he is put on the no-fly list, he is forced to hitch a ride with a man named Ethan Tremblay (Zach Galifanakis), who is driving there to become a successful actor.

THE MAN:

Peter Highman (Robert Downey Jr.) has his life under control. He is married to his wife Sarah (Michelle Monaghan) and their relationship seems healthy. Together, they live in a beautiful Californian house. At the beginning of the film, everything goes horribly wrong, but Peter stays calm trying to explain to the officers why he must go back to LA immediately. His ability to handle the situation like a boss without being too emotionally affected makes him look cool. Peter is a successful architect, so it’s clear he’s got an eye for design. He wears formal clothes and you can watch him rock his suit with style as he boards the plane with a first class ticket in his hand. Peter’s Benedict aviator style sunglasses by Oliver Peoples are badass, but let’s talk about his wristwatch.

THE WATCH:

In the movie, you can see Peter sporting a vintage Rolex Datejust. In most of the scenes, he wears his watch on the inside side of his wrist, but you can clearly see its Jubilee bracelet. Luckily, there is an Esquire article about Robert Downey Jr. from 2009. In the article, Downey Jr. mentions buying a small 1980s stainless-steel Rolex he found in a shop in the Hamptons. The interview took place before Downey Jr. went off to shoot Due Date and actors are often allowed to wear their own jewelry on set, so this is most likely the same watch he is wearing in the film. Peter’s DJ has a champagne dial, a traditionally fluted bezel and is 36mm in diameter, so we’re probably talking about the reference 16030.

CONCLUSION:

The thing about the Rolex Datejust is you can wear it both in the office and to the beach, so it fits any occasion. Peter’s outfit gets more damaged with every scene until his jacket is gone and his shirt is covered in dirt. However, his watch never feels out-of-place. That’s why Rolex is the biggest watch brand in the world and the DJ is one of the manufacturer’s most popular models. There are over 60 different combinations of cases, materials, dials etc. to choose from. Make sure you stay away from the floral motifs and the dials/bezel set with diamonds, but you can’t go wrong with any of the other combinations available.
